Chuck Norris Joke Cycle – American

“Chuck Norris’ tears can cure cancer.  Too bad he doesn’t cry.”

“Chuck Norris doesn’t do push ups, he pushes the world down.”

“Chuck Norris doesn’t get wet by the ocean, the ocean gets Chuck Norris.”

The informant is a 24-year-old warehouse worker and Equiptment Operator in the Navy Reserves. He was born and raised in the outskirts of Boston and moved to Los Angeles about a year and a half ago. He attends an Evangelical Christian church and is painter. He completed high school and is figuring out a college program to go to.

The informant detailed where he first heard these jokes: “I remember it was like my first drill [Navy Reserve weekend] at San Diego, and I remember I was paired up with this guy to show me the ropes. And all he did was tell jokes all freaking day thinking he was the coolest guy, I mean all he did was tell jokes. And, so yeah that’s what I heard it from.” The informant said he tells them all the time “because I think they’re funny.” When asked why he said, “I don’t know I guess that’s my kinda sense of humor.” Along with Michael Jackson jokes, these are the informants favorite jokes.

The informant is interested in very American guy types of things – American football, boxing, basketball, wrestling, he works in a warehouse with other guys, he’s in the Navy. I think something about this joke expresses this muscle-power masculine identity that he surrounds himself with. The first can almost been seen as this rejection of an academic or lab-rat lifestyle that some men live. Instead the informant more identifies with work that uses muscle strength rather than the mind. The second – pushing the world down, identifies with this super-human strength that Chuck Norris’ characters seem to have. The last, along with the second, may to point to a certain larger-than-life pride in themselves that this male sub-culture can have at times.

Ross Chris Newman – Chuck Norris popular culture.

Chuck Norris is a famous martial arts movie star who has been in dozens of different films and a couple television shows. He is most famous for starring in his TV sitcom, “Walker, Texas Ranger.” While he was a normal karate actor throughout his long career, in 2005 Conan O’Brien began a new fad of “Chuck Norris facts,” that took hold of a small internet community and eventually grew into a world-wide internet phenomenon. The jokes were originally centered on his television show “Walker, Texas Ranger,” but they gradually moved to other facets of daily life and eventually were composed of anything that any person could think of.

Chuck Norris has earned the title of being known as a tough, rugged, and strong man. This is most likely because of the roles he played in his acting career and all the “bad guy butt” he has kicked over the last few decades. He has earned the reputation of not being messed around with. Resultantly, people try and find a way to diminish a person’s standing with such a well-known and extensive history. A normal person probably would never have came up with these jokes because they perceive Chuck Norris in such high esteem, but because Conan O’Brien decided to begin the trend, others around the internet community received this as an “OK,” to continue the verbal bash on Chuck Norris.

The facts that people come up for Chuck are quite clever. The facts are normally absurd claims about Norris’s hardiness, attitude, virility, “alpha-male” status,” superiority, and masculinity such as “If you can see Chuck Norris, Chuck Norris can see you. If you can’t see Chuck Norris, you only have seconds to live.” Chuck Norris has been asked in interviews what he thinks about all these “facts” about him. He normally chuckles and responds to the interviewer that he thinks they are cute and funny. He does not take them seriously and realizes that the people who create these and the people who end up reading them have a great time doing so. So why ruin something that easily manufactures such happiness.

Chuck Norris facts are a perfect example of what the internet/digital age is capable of. Creating an internet phenomenon that is readily known throughout society from nothing. It is amazing to see how something so simple can become so important to a lot of people. Chuck Norris facts are a great way to get a quick laugh if someone is bored or is looking to cheer themselves up. I believe that is the main purpose for the advances in internet popular culture. Many people in the world are not happy with their lives, so the internet is great way to escape and experience the wonders that other people around the world have to offer.

Jokes – American

“The scientific community measures the amount of energy released during the Big Bang as being equivalent to 1 CNRHK, which stands for 1 Chuck Norris Round House Kick.”

“If you have $5 and Chuck Norris has $5, Chuck Norris has more money than you.”

“Chuck Norris does not go ‘hunting’ because the word ‘hunting’ implies the possibility of failure.  Chuck Norris goes ‘killing.’”

“Chuck Norris can kill two stones with one bird.”

“Chuck Norris once roundhouse kicked so hard and fast that his foot ripped through the space-time continuum and hit Amelia Earhart in the face as she was flying solo across the Atlantic.”

“Chuck Norris is so fast he can run around the world and punch himself in the back of the head.”

“Chuck Norris once visited the Virgin Islands. They are now The Islands.”

My cousin Nicholas told me that for a while Chuck Norris jokes were a non-stop phenomena around his school. Every day he would hear new Chuck Norris jokes and over time they grew more and more ridiculous. Nicholas told me that being armed with a handful of new Chuck Norris jokes could easily allow someone to have a captive audience and usually his classmates would get animated during the jokes and do things like punch the air or even the legendary Chuck Norris roundhouse kick. Nicholas informed me that Chuck Norris jokes are not popular in his school anymore. He said that people were coming up with Chuck Norris jokes so often that there was just too much and everyone got tired of hearing them over time.

I asked him what he thought the jokes were about and why they became as popular as they did. He told me that Chuck Norris is a lame old guy and the jokes just make fun of him. I asked him if he had ever seen a Chuck Norris film and he said he had not, but he quickly informed me that he had seen many videos making fun of him on the internet and was not at all interested in seeing any of his films.

I remember Chuck Norris from my youth and I have seen a few of his films. He I not particularly entertaining and almost comes across as bland or boring. I think the jokes were popular because they ascribed super human attributes to a somewhat normal guy. I actually like the fact that he is so normal because it makes me feel that even regular people can do amazing things, like Chuck Norris. I think this is also why such jokes are especially potent with children. They often emulate adults and do not yet have much power. Looking up to someone like Chuck Norris allows them to feel closer to the power they hope to one day acquire. In reality Chuck Norris is a 9th degree black belt and has even trained with legendary martial artist Bruce Lee, he just does not look like it on the surface.
