The proverb:

“Ponte Mantequilla”

what this means to the person:

when you’re having a bad day make yourself feel like butter and don’t let anything bad stick on to you. just slip everything off.  My mom used to tell me this when kids would pick on me or when something bad happens. Just put on butter and let everything slip right off.  The informant mentioned that it helped her get through a rough day and also helped her not take things to personally when it came to hearing things from others about her. Signifies how she’s growing up because she used to tell her that when she was a kid and takes it a different ay than it means now

My analysis:

Getting from the context of how slippery butter is, I can see how the person interprets this proverb. I can also see how relevant it is to here in the US. We have a huge bully problem and many kids pick on each other. This proverb helps people not take everything and absorb it.  Butter is also used in many other folkloric manners like for remedies for burns and stomach pain in the Mexico.

In the ranch that I lived in there was a boy a friend that I had met in Zacatecas. He said that he was able to speak to the dead and I brought him to my Ranch. In my Ranch there was a sort of a passage that crossed from one Pueblo to another. This passageway was called El Camino Real. This used to be in the olden time a area where a lot of Thieves would take your things so a lot of people it is sad that hid treasure around that passage area but it has never been found. Since my friend was able to speak to the dead he told us that we should call upon them and ask them where the treasure was.

We did just that and we started to wait for the guy to call upon the dead and we had to go in a circle and create a sort of a seance to call upon them and so we each held like a cloth blanket and held it was like circular and we were waiting for the guy to contact the dead somehow. 3 hours past and nothing until finally the guys his eyes started to shut so he started to fall asleep and then he woke up and said wait I need to go to the bathroom. And so we waited again. All of a sudden an hour past and my friends eyes turned white and after that he was telling us exactly where the treasure was and we started digging there but we never found anything. After that incident though think started hopping around the ranch door started to open and I saw a door started opening and random noises would happen as if something had he had brought something there so it was very scary because I had experienced it on my own in my Ranch and we still can’t find the money.

The story brings the informant close to his Ranch back home and his family as well as the friend and always kind of keeps him wishing that this was real because who wouldn’t want $5,000 or more.

This story has a rich history about what would happen in El Camino Real in the 1930s when thieves would come and steal a bunch of things from and money from people that would pass through that passage in El Camino Real and it is very historical for that area.

The story

A Superstition I have is that whenever make a wish because it’s 11:11 or birthday wishes or any type of wish and sometimes you make one I never said out loud because It will never come true

The background

The informant explains that the Superstition is very meaningful to them because they always want believe in miracles like this and just in case I wish does come true they don’t want to say anything out loud

This is very popular in Western culture the belief in Magic and miracles and spells like 11:11 and wishes just in general it is best to keep your mouth shut because sharing it will probably spoil ittehr eason for 11:11 being a so called magc number is because of its repetition in numbers which only happens twice a day.

The story

My gram’s house is haunted we all know it and one time when I was little I was playing with my cousins out in the living room because there’s like construction going on in the house so there wasn’t like a lot of other spaces until we are sitting in the living room playing with our dolls and we heard footsteps in the attic and we were really confused because there was no one home . And so we kind of ignored it the first few times and just kept playing and then like we are getting scared and also like frustrated because you didn’t understand like if somebody was messing with us so we decided to like go and check and That was not happening but we went and like looked in the backyard and like in the rooms and we like counted everybody who is at the house so I can make sure there was no way anybody could be upstairs because you’re just really freaking out But like my sounds like loud like footsteps why do they say your grandma’s house How old is the house really old really really old and actually stories of like like the people who have liked live there in the past like I don’t remember exactly but something really crazy happening in the house So there’s that and also my great grandpa passed away in the house. You think is it because like they feel like they will go so note that house basically

This informant felt  very attached to the story because she had experienced it first-hand and it meant a lot to her because it was during your childhood. The attic of her grandmother’s house has always been very creepy and hear noises coming from the attic freaked her out.  Her grandmother’s house is very old and many people were said to hang themselves and kill themselves in that house so a lot of the things that happened or unexplained.

This is a traditional ghost story about the property of the people who had lived there before.  the idea that the person that has lived in the house before still is attached to the house in a spiritual way which is the plot to many ghost stories. Usually by hanging and death in the house bring spirits into the house in which they cannot rest.

My boyfriend moved out of his house and his little sister always said that she saw like an older man in the around the house But not and then his mom got engaged in the hurt so her fiance like moved in with his kids and his youngest daughter also like just randomly like was really scared to at the end of the hall she saw a man and yeah so then like they’re like oh my God what’s going on. So then like you’re like oh my God what’s going on and then they like we’re getting ready to move out of the house because they were moving to a bigger house and things started happening like more often like like they would like Got to the point where Daniels little sister didn’t even want to stay at the house anymore because things would happen so frequently. One day they had all went off to work and his mom and there was a dead bird like a pigeon in the very center of the driveway in the middle of the garage and it has lit body like it look like it had been cut in two. They moved out because it was witchcraft.

Background : This story was from the informants boyfriend, and she really likes it because it is important to notice signs of witchcraft when you see them. This story had a lot of significance for the informant because it was so closely related to her boyfriend and his families safety.

Context: Mexican witchcraft is usually about someone cursing you and signs fall out of the sky via birds and murder. There are a lot of signs of witchcraft and when someone dos it on you. Mexico is a huge beleiver of witchcraft and witchery which should be avoided at all costs

the beamer

My school called High-Tech high is one of the very new charter schools that opened up in North County of San Diego and I had been there since 6 grade in 2011 when they were still in the mobile classrooms sort of thing before they built the new Middle School. I was in the mobile classrooms for  2 years Before they had built the new Middle School. The mobile classrooms meant a lot to my childhood especially my first years in middle school and a lot of things happened. There was a lot of exhibitions and projects and memories of going into the office and the nurse and when they built the new Middle School we were the very first graduating promoting 8th grade class of High-Tech middle school. In the new middle school they had a huge bar like a huge Beamer not a bar but a beamer That was supposed to be built into the building but before they had built in the Beamer into the building they had us all sign our names and it is visible in the building for everyone to see and for my class to come back in 30 years and be able to see the Beamer with my name on it which is I wouldn’t say a tradition but just day kind of like a tradition that will live there until my kids hopefully see it one day.

The meaning behind the beamer  is basically tradition and generation. It meant a lot to the informant because of longevity. They were the first graduating class of that fresh middle school, and that means after thirty years, there name will still be up there

There’s a story that I have heard about Hello Kitty and the reason why she doesn’t have a mouth. The story starts off with a mother trying to save her daughter from mouth cancer and so she sells her soul to the devil and the devil explains that if she makes a figure that has no mouth she will earn enough money to cure her daughter from cancer so she created Hello Kitty Hello Kitty means hello devil or yeah something like hi devil and it’s supposed to represent the devil so Hello Kitty is actually the devil. This was around the 1980s then the daughter was saved and the mother became very rich because of the creation of this character but it can affect us in the future which is really scary because now everybody has Hello Kitty plastered everywhere and Hello Kitty was such a huge brand and still is a very huge brand that they have stores and restaurants just based on that doll or character from Japan.

I have heard about this theory before and it shocks me on how real it gets. It is said to be a legend of a 70 year old chines woman  whose daughter was dying of cancer. she prayed and went to many churches which did nothing. That made her turn to the devil for instant gratification. she had made a pact with the devil. according to an online site “The mother was asked to create a character that would be famous all around the world. Satan wanted to attract as many people as possible and win new followers who would do everything for him. Buying this “doll” would be an involuntary offer for the devil. Some say that possessing this toy makes the demon stronger”  The evidence presented for this theory is that 1.) the kitty doesn’t have a mouth like the girl with mouth cancer, 2. The pointed ears are like the horns of satan, and 3.) kitty means demon in Chinese. The belief and legend behind this story is the fear of the devil regaining his power and being stronger than god.

Botellita de jerez Todo lo que digas sera al revez

Folk Metaphor

This saying was told by my grandmother  to me which has helped me throughout my life especially when people were being mean to me in school. In English it just means that everything that you say will be backwards so it will go back to you This meaning really helps you fight off those mean words that people tell you in school. You say this and everything that they say is basically going back to them and it really means that what they’re telling you is them telling themselves that.

The significance of this metaphor to the informant was that no matter what people said , with this saying you can turn all the bad things on to them. it was like a magic Karma spell. It has a lot of meaning because it takes way the pain of being called names or being picked on.  The informant like sit because it rhymes and its unique .

This is from Mexico and this saying is very  popularly and  this expression refers to everything you want for someone is going to return, or you’re going to return everything you said; or everything you say will be used against ..With this in mind, it is better not to wish anyone badly, or to say things that can be used against you.

I woke up in the middle of the night for some reason and I went to the kitchen and I saw my husband staring at me. He was smoking and I don’t like that he smokes inside of the house so I told him what are you doing turn that off and he just looked at me and you wouldn’t stop looking at me. He had such a scary look in his eyes and I started to get a scared and then he started to laugh. I then turn to the living room and I see my husband lying down on the couch sleeping and I run to him and I jump on top of him and I scream and I tell him wake up wake up and I told him what I saw and then that figure was gone.

Background: The informant experienced this encounter firsthand and she feels really strongly about this.  she believes that her husband at the time was allowing bad spirits and energy to get inside of him and manipulate him because of his regular drug use back then. She believes that bad spirits and energies come inside of you when you are doing drugs and sinning.  she says what she saw was a bad spirit doing the thing she hated him doing the most. it is very meaningful to her because she will never forget the face that looked back at her and looking at her actual husband sleeping on the couch. The house they were living in had bad spirits in it as well.  you would hear things at night and it was said when the land was bought out, they had found unborn babies buried in the dirt. It was said to be an abortion clinic when abortions were illegal.

This story  reveals a lot  of both haunting of houses and demons mixed together. The idea that the spirits of the babies and the oldness of the house haunted the informant made the idea of a demon entering more real. many demon stories do occur when something bad is traveling into  the house. This marriage was already bad and the alcohol and drug use would not stop. This can create tension and stress leading up to events that are difficult to explain

For Day of the Dead my country celebrates a lot like the movie “Coco” We go out and get the cemeteries and place a bunch of the orange flowers all over and we have a bunch of altars in each Cemetery to celebrate the Day of the Dead. We put out flowers guiding are dead family members to us so they can come and celebrate. We also do believe that putting the picture up in the altar allows them to come into the world of the living for that night and celebrate with us. There is a lot of singing and dancing that happens as well. The Day of the Dead is a huge thing in my country of Oaxaca and it is very meaningful to that country because it brings them closer to they’re dead family members. In a way we are keeping them alive by putting the picture up in the altar which is a lot like the movie “Coco” For my family we always put up all my grandparents pictures on the Altar and put a lot of sweet bread and things like that to honor the Dead.

The story or tradition is very important to the informant because it brings them closer to their family on the Day of the Dead. Instead of feeling sorrow for their loved ones they celebrate and bring them to the living world to see how much they’ve grown and be close to them in a way. Day of the Dead is very important to this informant and meaningful because she gets to go back to Mexico and see all of her relatives and also in a way see all of our dead relatives and Cemetery by putting up their pictures in the altar she feels closer to them more than just looking at their head Stone.

In the new Disney movie Pixar movie Coco this is seen and it’s very interesting how serious they take this and how the movie brought it to life . Is tradition is now widespread because of the movie and these folkloric tails and I might even start putting up an altar for my loved ones because I would love them for them to cross over as well
