Haunted School House

Apparently back in the 50’s and 60’s the hillside behind Mt hamilton was used as a missile test site and other government tests and was highly top secret. Those who worked back there made new lives for themselves because they were rarely able to leave. They had food and other products delivered to the small communities and the children even went to a school back there. The teacher of the school was going insane from the isolation and one day she hung all of the children (some say she even slit all of their wrists). She then took her own life and since then it has been haunted. People told me the story and said that if I went there and actually walked into the school, the kids try to help you and push your car away from the school to keep you from the ghost of the teacher, leaving fingerprints on the car. The first time I went there I was too scared to get out of the car and nothing happened. I went there again with my friend Trent and Dusty and oddly enough three other people were there. The weird thing was, the three kids went to my school Cuesta college and majored in architecture – same college as me, same major, all of which I thought was extremely weird because we were 200 miles from our school in San Luis Obispo. Then we went inside and saw a few ropes hanging from the ceiling and the atmosphere of the school was freaking me out. We then walked back to the car and parted ways with the people we met. They left first so we know they didn’t follow us but we happened to see them a few blocks from my house. We then got home and noticed a few finger prints on the car and the whole experience was pretty hard to comprehend.

Chris went on to tell me that has never been so scared in his entire life especially when we went into the school and saw ropes hanging from the ceiling. In retrospect he thought someone else might have gone in there and hung them to make it even scarier. Also the fact that the three other kids whom he had never seen before even though they were students with the same major at his college were there hundreds of miles away. He claims since seeing them that night he has never seen them again. The combination of all these things scared him to no end.

I feel this ghost story does so well because of the childhood aspect. The children’s handprints on the car are a very nice touch to the story that add a twisted aspect to the story. The children were innocent in this case, although sometimes in the media we see the children portrayed as evil. This story in general invites discussions about the belief of ghosts, after all, Chris did say he noticed some hand prints on his window. A ghost story is so popular in my opinion because of that unknown element, who knows why those handprints showed up or why there happened to be kids from his school there that same night.

Haunted Locker Room

Jimmy told me of this unnatural occurrence that happened at his high school in Akron, Ohio. Apparently in the 1950’s there was a student who felt extremely picked on and really just didn’t like his life. So one day he went into the boy’s locker room down below and hung himself from a pipe in there. Since then people have claimed to be in there alone and find all the showers turned on so the place steams up. Others have reported being there alone and hearing the toilet flush. Others simply feel a presence as though something else is there. Jimmy tells me this locker room always scared him not because of the haunting but because it had no windows and seemed like a cellar or prison to him. He did tell me his younger brother was in there one day by himself and felt a cold chill come over him followed by several lockers being slammed shut. He couldn’t believe it, it did not make sense because of the fact there were no windows. Both Jimmy and his brother were skeptical about the ghost until this happened.

Jimmy told me his thoughts on this haunted locker room commenting that it’s a great urban legend that some people take seriously, yet others believe to be just that, an urban legend. He himself was a skeptic until the experience his brother had. Now he tells me he feels you just never know what is possible. There could be this insanely powerful force out there and one part of that force is causing things like this to occur. Its all pretty mind blowing. Its definitely a story that will live on for a long time.

In my opinion, this story definitely has all the characteristic aspects of a ghost tale as far as a person loathing his life, dying and haunting the location where he roamed. This idea is often portrayed in movies and haunted houses at carnivals and amusement parks. We have a strange fascination with the idea of ghosts and the afterlife because it is one of those unknown topics. We create these ideas in our head in order to cope with the possibility of what lies in store for us when our time here is done.

Reid revealed to me a phenomenon he experienced first hand when he was 19 in South Texas outside of Houston. Reid is originally from Oklahoma but when he was a student in college in Texas and some of his friends that were from the area told him about an urban legend of mysterious bright lights visible on a lone highway. Reid said he was very skeptical at first but wanted to examine it firsthand just to say he had done it. He recalls driving down the highway for quite some time down in the empty flat land late at night. They pulled to the side of the road and looked to the east toward some hills and in the distance Reid said he saw green glowing lights just above the hill. This is an urban legend that many people in the area have attributed to seeing.

According to Reid many people speculated about what it was, and in the beginning it caused quite a stir as a great number of people presumed we were being invaded by aliens. When I asked Reid what he thought phenomena might be; he agreed saying he would certainly think that something very large is coming this way. The actual explanation is a reaction of certain gases in the air and light reflection which causes this green glowing effect in the night sky.

I agree that this example falls into place with many other common urban legends about us being invaded by aliens. The universe is so complex and we are so small that we yearn to discover any other possibility of life out there. So, when an opportunity like this occurs people are very quick to jump to the probability of extraterrestrial activity. Reid’s experience here is a prime example of a Von Sydow “memorate”. He had heard of his occurrence from his friends and decided to see it for himself creating a personal experience. I feel that urban legends like this gain such popularity because of man’s desire to see if intelligent life exists out there aside from ourselves. This is the reason why UFO urban legends and supposed sightings are common practice. An event like this certainly lends itself to be a prime example.

Pop culture over the last century has caused a increased fascination with lengends of extraterrestrial sightings and invasions. Dating back to the H.G. Wells radio broadcast of the War of the Worlds, humans have been attracted to any notion of other intelligent life in the universe. For the most part the portrayal of the aliens was extremely negative such as the vicious aliens seen in the blockbuster film Independence Day. To my knowledge the only recent positive depiction of aliens in popular culture would be E.T. Regardless of how aliens are depicted in the media, we have developed an utter fascination with them, which leads to the vast popularity of any form of urban legend surrounding visitors from another planet. Reid although skeptical at first still felt the urge to witness whatever those green lights could be. We do not like to hear the scientific facts behind issues like these because we would rather have our imagination run wild.

Urban Legend. Dangerous Men
So You Meet This Guy In A Bar…

There are a lot of urban legends that deal with the ways in which men lure women to their death. Alex Romano told me a story like that that is probably the creepiest I’ve ever heard.
In it, a girl goes to a bar one night looking to meet men, and she ends up making out with a random guy on the dance floor. After a period of dancing and kissing, he asks her if she’d like to come back to his place. Even though she wanted to make out with someone and possibly go home with them, she isn’t really feeling this guy and turns him down. A few days later, she isn’t feeling well and has developed a type of rash on her mouth, so she goes to the doctor to get herself checked out. The doctor asks her if she’s been with anyone in the last few days, and she tells him of the guy she made out with at the bar. He takes a sample from her mouth with a cotton swab and sends her home, telling her he’ll call her if he finds anything. A day or two later, she gets that call, and the doctor says, “We need to find that guy you met at the bar. The bacterium in your mouth is a kind that is only found on dead bodies.”
When I first heard this, I was like, “So wait, the guy was dead?” But then Alex explained to met that it meant the guy she met at the bar had been kissing dead bodies, and probably having sex with them, and that he probably intended to kill this girl by taking her home, only later to get busy with her body.
Alex told me that “at least two people” have told her that same story, saying that it happened to “some friend in France or whatever.”
I’ve noticed a lot of urban legends concern a dangerous man luring the innocent female to her death. Oftentimes though, the big twist comes with the reveal that the man would have done something to the girl, had he gotten her to come with him, but her female intuition told her not to. These urban legends seem to serve as warnings for women, advising against going anywhere with men you don’t know, and that if you do, you might end up in the arms of some necrophiliac, never to be seen again.
I think the large amount of urban legends dealing with this issue directly correlates to the high number of female rape victims in the United States. “One in six American women are victims of sexual assault…” With such a high number, most people know a girl who’s been sexually assaulted or raped, and therefore it’s pretty easy to believe one of these stories. And if you do, maybe it can serve as a warning. Urban legends are different than plain-old legends because they can serve as responses, and warnings, to modern issues.

420 Origins

– Urban Legend

“If I had a dollar for every time someone told me how 420 originated, I’d be rich… or I’d at least be a few dollars richer.  The first time I heard about 420, I was in middle school.  I was on the phone with a friend, and he told me, “its 4:20, light up a joint!”.  At the time, I had no idea what he was talking about… several years later, and its all clear to me.  The first origination story I heard in regards to 420 was that marijuana burns at 420 degrees.  I just assumed this was true, but I later heard that 420 was actually a police radio code use to identify teenage stoners… Turns out both of these are incorrect.  Now, although this eerie date is shared with Hitler’s Birthday and the Columbine shootings, it turns out, that this entire 420 operation originated from a small high school in California.  Yeah, you heard me right.  420 was born out of San Rafael high school back in the early 70s.  A bunch of kids used to get together after school around 4:20 pm to toke up.  They did this regularly, and even started referring to smoking as 420.  They used this to evade the police and their parents.  However, it slowly caught on, and it then began to spread.  Soon enough, 420 grew into an international symbol for marijuana.” (L.S.)

Informant Analysis:

“Who would’ve thought that a bunch of high school kids would have started a craze that would quickly spread across the globe as a universally known code for marijuana.  People everywhere, in America, and I know tons of people in England, who all refer to 420 as the epitome of weed culture. It now symbolizes the culture, and tons of activist groups have referenced 420 in their campaigns or in their names.  I actually didn’t find about the San Rafael origin until just before 4/20 of this year.  I heard it from a girlfriend who I think told me she read it in a facebook group.  So who knows, but it all sounds real enough to me… quite the Cinderella story really.” (L.S.)

Personal Analysis:

The urban legends surrounding the origin of 420 have long been discussed and debunked.  I feel it is only recently that San Rafael emerged as the original founding location of 420.  I feel that the number of stories surrounding 420 is far less important than what they have come to mean.  420 has been embraced around the world as the full embodiment of cannabis culture.  It can be seen in music, films, television, and all mediums of pop culture.  No conversation on marijuana folklore would be complete without some mentioning of 420.  420 has become not only an international holiday, but also the basis for marijuana activist campaigns.  Churches have been erected and have included 420 in their title.  420 has united smokers across the globe and has provided a common basis for an ethnic link.  People can now identify themselves as part of the cannabis culture simply with the reciting of three numbers.  This is diffusion at its greatest!

Annotation: Information about a comic book entitled 420 can be found in this recent edition of High Times Magazine. This magazine stands as the pinnacle for continuous marijuana published information.
