W: “We have a neighbor and he’s got a very spooky vibe to him. It used to be a family living next door, a husband, wife, and son. One day, maybe 5 or 6 years ago, I woke up to someone screaming early in the morning. It was like a nonstop very painful type of scream. Our other neighbors called the cops and we found out it was because the son had found his mother dead in the attic. Apparently, she had hung herself and the son found her. Now what I think is that she is haunting that house and her husband. The son went to college a few years ago and never comes back, I think I’ve only seen him a couple of times over the years. There were rumors that the wife committed suicide because her husband treated her so badly. Now the man is a recluse, he never says hello to us even when we’re super friendly. He seems kind of neurotic too, he’ll wash his whole car if it has one spec of dirt on it. I think she’s haunting him because the attic window is always open no matter the weather and I swear I’ve seen lights flickering in there. What else would would make this man so jumpy? He always seems angry. I’m surprised he hasn’t sold the house since it’s so big and he’s the only one living there now.”

Context:

W is middle-aged male living just outside of Washington, DC. This story was told to me when I asked if he knew any creepy stories about murders/ghosts in regular homes. This came to W’s mind. W does not necessarily believe in ghosts, but loves a good story.

Analysis:

I know of this story because I live with W, so it seems very believable to me for there to be a ghost in the house. I have witnessed the neighbor and his weird, grumpy attitudes. It’s such a sad story, but by the way the man acts now, I can see him possibly being a cause for his wife’s suicide. I have seen the attic window open as well, but never the lights flickering. Flickering lights, however, are often signs of ghosts, and attics are creepy places, so a lot of evidence points to a ghost living there.

Me: “So tell me about your cat that you saw as a ghost.”

P: “I had my cat, Mimi, for 24 years. She had been with me through everything. I got her right out of college in Miami and she traveled with me until I ended up in LA. She would act kind of possessed at times, like spazzing out and jumping around all crazy. She was a very curious cat. One time she fell out of my fifth story apartment into the bushes out front and I was so scared cause I didn’t know where she had gone.”

Me: “so besides Mimi acting possessed, when did you think you saw her ghost?”

P: “Well after she passed away, I was lying in bed and I swear I heard little kitty footprints coming up to the bed. As she got old, she couldn’t jump onto the bed anymore so I would pick her up and bring her onto the bed. So, I looked over the side of the bed and I thought I heard a little purring sound but there was nothing there.”

Me: “So you heard Mimi’s ghost, but never actually saw her correct?”

P: “Yes, after that I just got really sad because I forgot for a second that she was gone.”

Context:

P is a middle-aged woman living in California. I interviewed as we were bonding over our love for cats. Mimi died almost 10 years ago, but P still talks about her all the time. P really believes that Mimi was visiting her that night even though she couldn’t see her.

Analysis:

A common function of ghost stories is to bring comfort after losing a loved one. Pets are loved just as much as humans, so it makes sense that their ghosts would come back too. Whether Mimi actually came back as a ghost or if P was just hallucinating, it brought her comfort and a little happiness to know Mimi was still with her. I think thats the most important part of friendly ghost stories, bringing a little joy to a sad situation.

Text/Context: My friend’s college roommate, a 20 year old female, has had a very strong belief in ghosts ever since she was a child. It all stemmed back to a night where she saw a physical manifestation of a woman at the end of her bed, and felt a strange sense of comfort rather than fear. She described the experience in the excerpt below:

“When I was seven years old my family moved to a house built in 1968. One night a few months after moving in, I woke up to find an old lady sitting at the end of my bed with her hand over the covers on my legs. It was hard to make out her features in the dark, but I knew I had never met her before. Although there was a stranger in my room, I didn’t feel any fear, instead I felt a sense of comfort wash over me. It felt as if a grandmother was watching over and protecting me. Almost immediately after waking up I fell back asleep and she was gone when I woke up the next morning. That day I told my mom about the old lady I saw in my room and she calmly told me that it was my grandmother who had come over. Unbeknownst to me, she was secretly freaking out because my grandmother had not been at our house the night before. Years later my mom brought up the old woman in my room, and told me her side of the story. She told me that the previous owners of our house had their mother living with them in the room that was eventually mine. The mother had died in bed of old age. My mom believes that the old woman who sat on the end of the bed was the mother who died in that room, and she appeared to me to show me she was there to comfort and protect me. My mom believes that the old woman was my guardian angel while I was living in the house, and I’d like to believe that too.

My Thoughts: I think this story is incredibly interesting as it demonstrates how some ghosts can be seen as comforting or protective. Oftentimes in both modern media and older documents, ghosts are seen as terrifying figures bent on striking fear into the hearts of their victims. The ghost in this story was definitely peaceful, and simply wanted to be seen. If I was personally in this situation, it’s hard to imagine feeling comforted and not scared by another person being in one’s room in the middle of the night, but I believe that there was an instinctual reaction my storyteller had that convinced her she was safe. There is also a bit of the social aspect of ghosts shown in this story, as the storyteller’s mother originally tried to cover up the fact that her daughter had seen a ghost. The mother was afraid for her daughter’s safety and didn’t want her to understand what had truly happened. The reality of ghosts is very taboo, and is often not spoken about as if it were a serious matter. Because of this, the mother hid the story of the woman who died from her daughter for years until she felt she was mature enough to understand it. Perhaps the mother even needed time to understand what had happened herself. Lastly, I enjoy the storyteller’s optimistic outlook at the end of the excerpt, as she notes how she would like to believe that the woman was her guardian angel, rather than a malevolent figure.

Text/Context: This week, I sat down with one of my good friends, C, in the dining hall to talk about ghosts. She’s a first year student at USC and we both have a similar belief about ghosts and their existence. I recorded our conversation, and the following excerpt is a written transcript:

“So, I have a family house that’s on the beach and my grandparents built it. They, my grandpa, like literally built the house. Okay, so my grandparents built the house and my grandparents died before I ever knew them. My grandma died when my dad was in high school and my grandpa died when my dad was in college. And um, there have been other like, deaths in the family and my parents have always said that that house was haunt-well no haunted. That it’s spirited. So, basically, my dad will wake up in the middle of the night and hear kids playing on the beach. And there’s nobody on the beach, it’s high tide and it’s like 2am. But he’ll hear the sounds of children playing. Um, I’ll wake up and I’ll see like figures standing in the corners of the room and it’s not like oh my god I’m freaked out it’s like oh I’m comforted right now cause like I know somehow that maybe it’s my family. Like, just watching me sleep. What else… my sister’s friend’s mom, she’s like, very, like I wouldn’t call her a medium but she’s very in touch with the spiritual side of things, and she walked into the house and there’s a staircase that you can see from the dining room. So she looked at the stairs and she was like, who’s that standing on the landing of the stairs? And we all turned and there was a shadowy figure standing there and then it disappeared and she said she had noticed it when she walked in. It was really weird.”

My Thoughts: I thought one of the interesting aspects of this story was the fact that C’s parents referred to the house as spiritual rather than haunted. It showcases how the way people’s opinions about ghosts is very dependent on how they grew up and the people surrounding them. The fact that they call the house spiritual most likely means they feel that the word haunted has negative connotations. Views on ghosts vary from society to society and family to family, and one must understand that there is a large variety of words that can mean similar things. In this story, the ghosts are not threatening, so there is no reason to speak of them in a negative manner by saying the house is haunted. There were also a lot of different occurrences that happened in this house, rather than one isolated incident. This lends to the classic ghost motif of haunted houses which have been prevalent throughout history, with ghosts consistently haunting a house and staying there for long periods of time. It is hard to decipher if the figures that the family is seeing is their grandparents specifically, or just their relatives in general. Unlike other ghost stories I’ve heard, there was no physical manifestation of a ghost that took full human form, and it simply remained as shadowy figures. However, the family members did not feel much fear about the ghosts, going as far as feeling somewhat comforted by the thought of their family members watching over them.

The Haunted Radisson Hotel – Tucson

Text

R – “Okay, so it was May, and I was in Arizona. We (himself and his co-workers) were staying in a hotel because we lived in Glendale Arizona but were in Tuscon for work. I just got off of work and went to go take a shower. I shower, hop out grab a towel, look in the mirror and all I see is a little girl staring back at me. She had blonde hair and was wearing a blue shirt. I could see it vividly. Then I wiped my face and eyes and she was gone. I went downstairs to the desk and asked if this hotel was haunted. The worker said he didn’t think so, so I followed up asking if someone had died in the hotel. The worker then said plenty of people had died in this hotel, so I asked if a little girl died in the hotel. The worker said no just older people. So, I asked if there were any murders and the worker quickly said that he could not answer the question. I looked it up and found out that a lot of workers have reported hearing child-like giggling when alone.”

Interviewer – “What did you do after that incident?”

R – “Of course, I slept in my coworker’s room because I am not dealing with that.”

Context –

This story occurs in The Radisson in Tucson Arizona a few years back. R, 29, is originally from Washington State but has since moved to numerous states and countries due to being in the Air Force. This story takes place during one of his work trips for the Air Force.

Analysis –

After hearing about this encounter, I researched The Radisson Hotel in Tucson and found plenty of recounts of paranormal occurrences and murders. Others have encountered similar experiences including TVs and lights chaotically flickering like someone is playing with them, or crying sounds heard in the ballroom. However, I was not able to find a claim that fully supports R’s event of a little girl. Despite not finding exact matching claims I think that R was speaking his truth about the situation due to him normally being a paranormal skeptic and similar stories.
