“Whistling at night will bring snakes”

The informant heard of this when he was very young from his parents. He and his friends would whistle at night and his mom warned that they will wake the snakes and they will come to the house. In fear of bringing snakes, my informant never whistled again during night or day until he was the age of 15.

I think this short little tale warning not to whistle at night was derived partially at least, from the art of Indian snake charming. There are over hundreds of these folktales that warn kids to do or not do and judging from the experience of my informer, it worked for his parents to keep their children quiet at night.
