Text : “I’ve actually been a caregiver the last 4 years. One time we had a patient pass away two days before I went to work and when I passed by her room I felt, like, her presence there very strongly. And actually when I passed that particular hallway the lights started flickering all of sudden, like a lot. And I felt that somebody was behind me, like a presence. And it felt really weird and I turned around and when I sensed that presence, my hairs on the back of my neck stood up. I whispered ‘I know that’s you, you’re coming in to check on me.’ And then the lights flickered again and that was the last time they flickered. I had a really good relationship with the person. And I was like, oh that’s just your way of letting me know that you’re here.”

Context : I heard this story at a family gathering in Rohnert Park, during Thanksgiving Holiday. J was the closest person to my age there so we naturally began talking about university and aspirations. The topic of ghosts came up and I asked her if she had any stories. She immediately clarified that the anomalies in the stories were not ghosts, but spirits.

My thoughts : I think this is a classic mix of many familiar ghost stories in that it surrounds a place where death is common (like a hospice center) and a lot of the signs she mentioned were classic, almost as if she’d seen it in a movie sometime. I also thought it was interesting that she chose to call the ghost in her experience a spirit, almost as if she felt it to be a more fitting term for a well-meaning visit from the dead.

Text : “One time, when I was about 17/18 years  old–which has been many years ago since I’m 74 years old now–some friends and i decided to go on this dark road, since we had heard stories about an odd shining light appearing, and we didn’t really believe it, so we decided to go down there one time. Down this long dark road and when we got there we said ‘turn your lights out!” So we turned our lights out, and before you knew it, here comes this bright shining light coming down the road out of nowhere. I couldn’t believe it! We got so scared, and turned that car around so fast, and high tailed it out of there. It was out in the country, so I know it wasn’t a motorcycle or anything. Who knows what it was? It wasn’t an owl with big eyes, but it sure was scary!”

Context : I heard this story from my Grandma B, at a family gathering in Rohnert Park (a city in the Bay Area) as well. She told me that this story occurred when she lived in Independence, Kansas, a long time ago. We are a Christian family, so it’s not often that we talk about ghosts. But if anyone in my family were to, it would be her as she often veers her thoughts towards things like reincarnation, vampires, and other supernatural concepts. So I’d never heard her speak about this experience before, and it took her a good while to remember after I asked her.

My thoughts : I definitely think my grandma’s age is an important factor to remember, because, I must admit, many things often get twisted in her recollections. But that aside, you can definitely see that “coming-of-age” “test-of -bravery” theme in her experience that’s common with many, especially in historic, small towns. She didn’t go into much detail on what kind of road exactly they were on and whether or not the figure was coming from the other side or ahead which I found interesting, because it sounds a lot like what you’d see if another vehicle, motorcycle, or bike were heading your way. Or maybe even a reflector on a pole or medium on or around the road. But she was very confident that wasn’t the case.

Rabbits in Ireland

My dad did research in Ireland for a long time, but one memory really sticks in his mind. There was a week dedicated to Irish music called Willie Clancy Week. My dad was there in 2002 staying in a tiny youth hostel for the summer. He went out one night to go check out the music being played and ended up staying quite late into the light. He got on the road back to the hostel at three in the morning and got on this coastal road that went along the water for miles. Nobody lived in this area, it was mostly a grassy area for cows to graze with cliff faces on one side. My dad drove around a corner and suddenly saw hundreds of rabbits all across the road. He slammed on his brakes and somehow managed to miss all of the rabbits on the road. When he looked back into his rearview mirror there were no rabbits anywhere to be seen. He said he couldn’t see any trace of rabbits and had a weird feeling about the interaction. He checked with his professor the next day to see if there was any Irish folklore connected to rabbits, but he hasn’t found anything.

My dad doesn’t tell many supernatural stories so it was very interesting to finally hear one from him. I did some research afterwards and found that rabbits represent prosperity and good fortune in Celtic mythology. Rabbits are associated with the moon and seen to be more active at night. The story left me extremely puzzled and hoping for something to explain it in the future.

The Sailor’s House

My parents moved from Hartford to Higganum Connecticut in 1997 or 1998 to live closer to graduate schools. They moved into a house built by a ship captain in 1720 that was right by the Connecticut River. Their rent was lower on the condition that my dad put in 15 hours of work per week on the house. My parents were told that the previous tenant had gone a bit insane and started destroying the house, leaving it in horrible shape and with very dangerous living conditions. They started working on the house and trying to keep all of the parts of it historically accurate because it was important to the community and owner. The house itself had weird rooms and amenities including a birthing room that had been used for births and deaths in the past. My dad said that he usually used that room to write his papers and keep up with work. The ghost aspect was that whenever my dad had extra work he needed to do for school and hadn’t put in his fifteen hours that week, he could feel the presence of the captain who built the house. At night, my mom and dad wouldn’t go downstairs from the bedroom because there were so many weird noises and a weird feeling whenever they had to go there in the dark.

My parents never tell supernatural stories and on the rare occasion they do it’s from a friend, so this was an unusual thing to hear from my dad. After listening to this story I definitely wonder if in the time since they’ve moved out someone has experienced something similar.

Text: “Ever since I could remember, my mom had this recurring nightmare of the same figure. In her dream, there was this lady with long hair who was wearing a long, green dress. Everything about her seemed stretched. The dreams were so prominent that the Lady in the Green Dress was a household name. She never extended her reach outside of dreams, however, until her and her second husband’s anniversary. To celebrate, the couple booked a night at some old, decrepit hotel. She can’t remember the name of it, but said it reminded her of the Bate’s Motel from Psycho. On the first night at midnight, my mom said she woke up and felt the air around her go heavy, and when she opened her eyes, the Lady in the Green Dress was hovering no more than six inches above her. The fog immediately cleared from her head as she froze, staring at this floating apparition from her dreams. After a few moments, she registered what she was seeing, bolted out of bed, and screamed.”

Context: KV’s mom was not a spiritual person. She always took a practical, scientific approach to things. Therefore, it’s surprising that she’d share, and more importantly believe, a story like this. As for the informant, KV firmly believes in ghosts, therefore this story was not difficult for her to share, in fact, however, she made it known her mom constantly talked about the lady in the green dress throughout her childhood. She mentioned how this was the one exception her mom made to her belief in the supernatural.

Analysis: This is a classic ghost story involving many examples of liminal spaces. For example, the initial appearance of the apparition occurred, and recurred, in a dream. Dreams occur in the REM stage of the sleep cycle, a paradoxical stage in which the mind acts as if it were awake, but the body is paralyzed. Additionally, the couple stayed at an old hotel, giving the impression of a classic, gothic haunted house typical of many ghost stories. The apparition appeared to KV’s mom at midnight, the liminal period between two days. While all of these elements are reminiscent of a classic ghost story, I myself am not completely convinced of an actual haunting. I believe the Lady in the Green Dress was in fact a character in a recurring nightmare, however, as the supposed physical appearance occurred during the night, I believe it may have just been a very convincing dream. However, who is to say the Lady in the Green Dress did not appear to KV’s mom that night, for dreams may exist in a space between the living realm and the realm of the dead.
