Itching Palms

My informant told me about a popular belief in India where if your palms are itchy then that means that someone is thinking about you. She first heard about this belief when she was in 8th grade. She really doesn’t think it is true but whenever her palms itch she has a premonition or thought that someone in her family from back home is missing her or is thinking about her. She said that she has also heard many variants and versions of this belief.

She has heard that if your mom itch that it means you have money coming you’re way, in the form of income or gifts. She heard this version from her friends in college when she was 19 years old. She also stated that she really doesn’t think this is true, money comes to you because you work hard or it is your birthday.

She has also heard a variant of this belief where if you are hiccupping a lot that means that someone in you’re family is thinking about your or missing you. This belief she heard recently from one of her friends, who also happens to be Indian.

I think these beliefs once again are just mere beliefs and don’t mean anything in real life. In a sort of way I think these are just things that are you in your head and think about it when that specific incident happens, such as palms itching or hiccupping. Many of these beliefs are passed on generation by generation and act like a family heirloom for each family. Each family probably has some kind of belief that only their family associates with, and this one is what my family is in association with among many others. Itchy palms might mean nothing to some families but in my family it means that someone is missing you dearly.

Sneezing When you Leave

My informant told me about a superstition in her family. She told me that when you sneeze right when you were about to leave, it is bad luck and you were supposed to stay where you are for a few minutes before you leave. This happened to me in real life once. I sneezed right when I was about to leave her room and she told me to stay. She said that her mom always did it when she was young. I asked her if you needed to leave real badly what would happen then? She said that her mom would give her a spoon full of sugar so the bad luck would go away. I asked what the sugar symbolized and she didn’t have an answer to that. Her mother has held this superstition for a long time.

I believe that this superstition is very valid. When someone sneezes, I have always had a premonition that it is evil spirits inhabiting your body. So it is clear that when you sneeze when you leave evil spirits are there and are going to hamper your journey.

My informant also told me about many variations to her superstition. She said her mom used to tell her that when you sneeze early in the morning, it means that you are going to have good luck during the whole day. When you sneeze in the mid day you are going to get along well with everyone that day and when you sneeze late in the afternoon it is a sign of something bad. She has held these superstitions close to her. She said that one day she sneezed at night and she got a poor grade in her exams one night.

This superstition might be prevalent all over the world but this specific one is from India. People from India are very superstitious and credulous. I might say they are the most superstitious people in the world. Sometimes their superstitions might be hampering their culture and their lives but sometimes it is very true to believe in what they do. Religion dictates a lot of things with superstition. Hinduism is a very superstitious culture, so I think this has to do with a lot of what happens in that society.

It’s unlucky to have a turtle as a pet.

My informant first heard of this superstition when she was around 6 years old.  My informant wanted a turtle as a pet but her parents refused to let her have one.  Growing up as a child, my sister wanted a turtle as a pet.  However, because of what my mother’s parents told her, my sister could not have a turtle as pet.  My sister did not understand why she could not have a turtle since it would not be that hard for her to take care of it.  It would not be nearly as hard for her to take care of a pet turtle as a pet dog.

My mother explained to my sister that in the Vietnamese culture, having a turtle as pet is seen as bringing bad luck to the family and to the house.  A turtle in the Vietnamese culture is seen as slow and sluggish.  Since it seems as if turtles lack energy, it is believed that if a turtle is in a person’s house then the house will not be filled with cheerfulness and joy.  The house and family will not be filled with excitement and laughter.  Instead, it is believed that struggle will come upon the family.  The turtle will bring it’s gloominess to the family.  It is believed that having a pet with more energy is better for the family.  That is why many Vietnamese families have dogs, cats, or rabbits as pets.  These animals are more energetic and will bring more luck to the family.  These pets are seen as fortunate animals to have in the house.

If you spill salt, you must take some and throw it behind you so you won’t be unlucky.

My informant first heard about this superstition while he was watching a movie.  He was watching the movie “Just My Luck” starring Lindsay Lohan.  In the movie, Lindsay Lohan is the luckiest girl in the world.  However, she meets a really unlucky guy and through a kiss their luck switches.  Lindsay Lohan becomes really unlucky and while she is in a restaurant she spills salt.  To not get bad luck, she takes some of the salt and throws it over her shoulders.

Salt is associated with a lot of symbolism and superstition.  In ancient societies, salt was very expensive to buy and was a very precious product.  Salt is used as a preservative and in someway began to symbolize life.  Salt also became a sign of hospitality, trust and friendship because of how expensive it was.  Therefore to spill salt was a waste and many people believed that bad luck came to the person who spilled it.  Some people also believed that if salt was spilt in a particular person’s direction then bad luck would come to that person.  Some people throw salt over their shoulders.  However, salt must be tossed over their left shoulder and into the face of the Devil.  Therefore, spilt salt should never be cleaned up.  Some people also believed that enough tears must be cried to dissolve the spilt salt.  This would reverse the bad luck that was coming to the person.  Another superstition for salt is that salt is thrown on the threshold of a new house for good luck.

On the lunar calendar, the 5th, 14th, and 23rd day of each month are days that will bring bad luck.

My informant first heard of this superstition from his parents when he was in Vietnam.  My informant got a new job and was going to start on the 5th day of August.  When he told his parents, his parents told him to not start his job until the next day.  My informant’s parents told him that it would be bad luck to start on the 5th.  His parents told him that according to the lunar calendar, new or important things should not be started on 5th, 14th, or 23rd day of each month.

In American culture, there is a similar superstition.  Many people believe Friday the 13th is an ominous day.  This superstition is one of the most widespread superstitions in the United States.  Many people will not go to work on Friday the 13th and many couples will definitely not have a wedding on Friday the 13th.  Many people believe that 13 is an unlucky number.  People believe that 13 is such an unlucky number that in many hotels, there is not a thirteenth floor.  Many horror films have been made about Friday the 13th.  Some horror films even come out on Friday the 13th.  Some people also believe that Friday the 13th is an unlucky day because it is believed in Christianity that Jesus was crucified on a Friday.

In some different cultures, the number 13 is considered a lucky number.  The number 13 is considered lucky in China and in Italy.
