The Office Building Ghost

Story: This is a crazy story that happened to me in December that I still think about everytime I go to work. I think it was like December 10th or 11th or something like that and I was working in the homebase office of my job, which I never go to, and it seems like for good reason. 

Well this day, I got to work and my manager was acting a little odd. She seemed a little antsy, a little jerky, but I brushed it off as an off day. A few hours go by and she just is not letting up. She’s squirming in her chair, sighing, huffing and puffing… and so finally I go “Hey, is everything okay?” And my manager assures me everything is fine and that she just needs to take a breath outside. So, she gets up, and as she’s walking out the door, a box of tissues on her desk goes FLYING off. 

Now, I do not believe in ghosts, I never have, I don’t think I ever will, but I swear on my life that this box of tissues, on its own, went flying off my boss’ desk and onto the floor. 

So, my boss turns around and shrieks “DID YOU SEE THAT?” and of course I did but I said “Oh the vent must be turned up too high.” But, I knew damn well that there was no vent… there must’ve been a spirit or something in that office, but I didn’t want to freak her out more than she was that day. 

My boss then steps outside finally, I pick up the tissue box, and as I do, a tissue is YANKED out of the box and onto the floor … and again, I swear I did not touch the tissue. It flew out of that box and I felt a force. That’s when I went running outside to grab my boss, and she did not want to come back into that room…so instead she went home, grabbed sage, and we burned sage in the room to rid it of the spirits there. 

To this day, that is the craziest thing that’s ever happened to me. I don’t know if I believe in ghosts, but I do believe that happened.

My friend begins by emphasizing that they don’t believe in ghosts, but what they experienced at work that day has possible caused them to reconsider, at least for a little bit. This is a common feature in ghost lore: even skeptics can become believers when faced with something they can’t logically explain. It also highlights how ghost stories often originate from direct personal experience, evolving into contemporary folklore through retellings and shared memory.

The role of the sage burning at the end of the story also speaks to the blending of traditional folk practices with modern life. Burning sage is a ritual drawn from spiritual traditions, and in this case, it’s used as a way to cleanse a space of any hauntings, demons, or spirits, which is something we see across many cultures. The fact that this person and their boss felt compelled to perform a ritual to fight back at a spirit shows how folklore is still deeply tied into our behavior, even if we don’t know it.

The informant (AW) lives in an adjacent county to the Harper’s Crossroad in North Carolina in Bear’s Creek where this legend is reported to be.

A circle that looks like it has been scorched with a burning fire in a park. Nothing grows in this ring, and allegedly, Satan paces around it at night while in contemplation of his evil plans. Objects left in the ring will disappear, and dogs always bark and yowl when they’re nearby, often expressing distress or anxiety and a desire to leave the vicinity. Some say that it was an ancient meeting place for Native Americans.

Analysis

As North Carolina is a fairly Christian state, it’s not surprising that a superstitious area associated with Satan would be Native Americans as settlers displaced them over time. The informant also reported that their state’s history education lacked any details about its history with the indigenous people, but upon further research, I found that there was, of course, violent conflicts between the settlers and the natives. The superstition associating dark magic and satanic phenomenons with “ancient” Native American significance likely reflects a general xenophobic attitude toward the unfamiliar outgroup from the occupants of this colonized land. Just as it’s common for ghost haunting stories to take place on slave plantations and indigenous cemeteries, this likely explains why the largely Christian population associated this location with both the Native Americans and satan.

“Jinns—there are evil ones, good ones, Muslim ones—they’re basically spirits. They can possess you. There are certain things you’re not supposed to do, like stare in the mirror too long, stay in the bathroom too long, or listen to music in there, especially if you’re naked. That attracts Jinns. If a Jinn falls in love with you, they can possess you, stop you from getting married, and even have children with you.”

Context:
The informant is Muslim and grew up with strong cultural and religious beliefs around the Jinn. These stories were often told in the household to reinforce behavioral norms and maintain spiritual awareness. The mention of Jinns falling in love adds a layer of romantic and paranormal tension to the legend.

Analysis:
The Jinn is a foundational concept in Islamic theology and Middle Eastern folklore, often acting as both a spiritual metaphor and a literal belief system. This legend highlights behaviors that might be seen as immodest or spiritually vulnerable, reinforcing modesty and spiritual caution. The romantic element—Jinns falling in love and disrupting relationships—adds a psychological dimension, providing an otherworldly explanation for earthly struggles in love or marriage.

“Today, I’m going to tell you about El Cucuy—also known as the Boogeyman. It’s a Spanish legend about a tall, shadowy figure who scares misbehaving children. In Spanish culture, they say El Cucuy watches you from outside your window, or even hides in your room under the bed. If you weren’t behaving, you had to run and hide in your room or he’d get you.”

Context:
The informant heard this story from older family members during gatherings, particularly when the kids were restless and waiting for food. It served both as a form of entertainment and discipline, using fear to encourage good behavior.

Analysis:
El Cucuy is a classic example of child-disciplining legends across cultures, akin to the American “Boogeyman.” In Latino households, it is commonly used to instill fear-based obedience. The figure of El Cucuy embodies abstract fear and serves as a warning against moral or behavioral failure. This version shares traits with global “dark watcher” figures like Slenderman, showing how traditional folklore adapts to modern imagery. The use of “under the bed” or “outside the window” roots the fear in a child’s intimate spaces.

“Once upon a time, there was a Bay Area woman named Kate. She was secretly a serial killer, though no one knew. Much like Jeffrey Dahmer, she lured victims into her home and murdered them. Afterward, she allegedly ran a burger shop—this is what we heard as kids—where she sold burgers made of 70% human meat and 30% beef. She managed to make a living this way for 34 years until she was finally caught in her mid-50s. According to the legend, she owned the now-abandoned burger joint on Telegraph Avenue in Berkeley.”

Context:
The informant first heard this story as a child on the playground during elementary school recess. It was shared between classmates as a spooky urban legend tied to a local location, enhancing the eeriness and making it more believable for children. The real abandoned burger shop added a tangible anchor to the tale.

Analysis:
This legend appears to be a locally adapted variation of cannibalistic folklore, reminiscent of real-life serial killers like Joe Metheny, who allegedly served human flesh in food. The informant suggests that a classmate may have blended true crime details with imagination to create a personalized Bay Area legend. The location-based element (Telegraph Avenue) helps localize the horror and make it culturally relevant for young listeners. This legend functions as both cautionary tale and urban myth, warning of hidden danger beneath everyday appearances.
