Rose, Theater Ghost Memorate

Age: 19

Story: What I remember is that Rose was a former student that died in the school and haunted the theatre in particular. She would bang around in the cats [catwalks] and ventilation especially if you were the only one in the theatre. Among techs I think there was more serious beliefs about how to treat Rose, aka ghost light and personally always saying hi and bye to rose if I was the first one in or last one out, or if she made noises I would talk to her sometimes. – JH

Context: This story was told directly to the archivist as a friend. It is regarding a ghost that was thought to populate their high school theater since the program’s inception.

Teller seems fairly convinced of the rituals that go into the ghost, they mention turning on the ‘ghost light,’ which is the last light left on the stage when people have left, and talking to it in their spare time.

Theaters are often places that claim to experience ghosts. The story of Rose was passed between multiple generations of student tech workers, perhaps to explain things like the weird banging in the ventilation shafts or unexplainable tech problems. There is no evidence showing that a former student died in the school, but a mockumentary was made by some former theater students showcasing Rose’s inception.

The Haunted Mirror

Age: 18

Text:

Interviewer: “S, tell me your story whenever you’re ready.”

SA: “Okay. So, my uncle had moved into a house a couple years ago, and my grandparents and my aunt had helped him move in. 
And while they were looking at the house, they really liked it. He was able to get everything unpacked. But he and his wife, a couple weeks or months after he had moved in, weird things started happening. 
Like, while he was home alone and his wife was at work, lights shut on and off, or he would hear things around the house, which shouldn’t have been possible because he was home alone. So after a while, with all these strange things happening, um, he decided to call, uh, like, a ghost specialist. Like a, like a priest or something like that. 
And basically the priest went through the house and saged it. Then he got somebody who he wanted to just check deeper into what was happening. But basically this person was asking a bunch of questions. 
They’re like, yeah, there is something definitely off about the house. We just don’t know what it is. And as they kept asking him more and more questions, they finally asked him something that really clicked to him, which was, ‘do you have a mirror in your garage?’ 
And he was like, yes, like, how did you know? They were like, ‘where did you like get this mirror?’ 
And basically he had told them, he said, he had gotten this mirror, which was ike, it was almost like a cultural thing around the mirror. It was like a face on top of this tiny mirror that was in his garage. 
And he told the priest or whoever it was, come in and check the house, that he had got it from a garage sale, and then the person told him you need to get rid of it immediately, because there was a spirit attached to it. And that is what was happening in the house. And basically, they told them, don’t ever bring things back from garage sales, because you never know why the person is even trying to sell it. 
Because it was a really nice mirror. So why were they trying to sell it for not a lot of money in the first place? And as soon as he got rid of the mirror, all of the weird things disappeared.”

Interviewer: “Thank you so much. Um, what do you think of the story? Do you believe it?”

SA: “My uncle… My uncle likes to lie a lot. So what do I think? 
I thought he was lying. But what made me really believe it is that his wife was also saying these things were happening and she isn’t a liar. So it’s probably true.”

Interviewer: 
”What do you think about it?”

SA: “About what?”

Interviewer: “The ghost and whether or not you believe in it or believe in ghosts in general.”

SA: “
I believe that stuff like that can happen. I believe things like that could happen, but I also believe it could be things other than ghosts.”

Interviewer: “Like such as?”

SA: 
“The wind?”

Context:

She was told the story when she was 13, and her uncle was about 39. He grew up in Oregon, and he was unemployed at the time of the story. He told this story to her in the living room of her grandparents house. The actual setting of the story took place in St. John’s, Oregon.

Analysis:

This is a clear example of peer / familial groups and their influence on ghost stories. The informant, knowing her uncle, was fairly certain he was probably not telling the truth. However, because of her aunt’s testament, she believed it. This story also follows typical ghostly motifs (flickering lights, strange noises, etc.)

Friendly Ghost

Age: late 70s/early80s

Text:

In the mid 1950s my mom and dad were looking for a house. They get a tour of this house from Mr. P who is looking to sell because his wife recently died. During the showing, my mom wants to ask to look in the closet but she gets a weird feeling like she shouldn’t, a mental message that said “Don’t open the closet door”. Mr. P is also reluctant and not wanting to show them the closet. So she sends out a mental “Please let us see it, I just want to know how big it is.” and the feeling goes away and Mr. P says he guesses it’s all right. She looks in the closet to find suits and old dresses belonging to the dead wife. They buy the house and move in. One day, my mom is boiling water and she goes upstairs, forgetting about the water and some time later she hears three big bangs and runs back downstairs to find the water nearly boiled dry. Those sounds were, of course, Mrs. P warning her about her water so she wouldn’t destroy her house. Eventually the kids grow up and move into a new house. The new occupants of the house also hear strange things so they call my mom to ask if it’s haunted, she says yes it is but its only Mrs. P and she is very nice don’t worry.

Context:

My grandma told me this story that her mother sent her in a letter in the 1980s. It takes place in Washington state.

Analysis:

In the letter, my great grandma (grandma’s mom), says she recalls a couple other times where she did things like leave the water running and got the three big bangs again, because of this she believes Mrs. P didn’t think she was a very good housewife. In the letter she says that she believes the Bible is not clear about where spirits are until the second coming so it doesn’t surprise her that Mrs. P would be back in the house she loved. She also expressed surprise that the young lady who bought the house called their realtor to ask if it was haunted, she of course told them about Mrs. P being nice and helpful and guessed that the reason they felt Mrs. P might be because they were remodeling the house.

My grandma’s thoughts on this are that she completely believes her mother felt something as she herself, along with other family members, have also felt similar strange things in the past. 

It was very fun to learn that we have a “haunted house” story in our family, though it’s not a traditional haunting because Mrs. P seems like a very nice ghost. The reaction of my great grandma to having a ghost in her house is very fitting for the type of people my family are, she just accepted it, unafraid, and lived alongside the ghost. Even though she was religious, having mentioned the bible in her letter, my great grandma seemed completely open to the idea of having a “spirit” living in her house, not attempting to use the bible to explain it in any way. I found it interesting that the actions of the ghost and the explanation my great grandma gave line up almost exactly with what we learned in class (GESM 120, Ghost Stories – Throughout Time and Around the World). Mrs. P’s love for her house driving her ghost to remain to protect it makes a lot of sense and I believe this story has to have at least some aspect of truth to it because of that. Mrs. P can be seen as a representation of a true early 1900s housewife who devoted not only her life but also her afterlife to caring for her house. This story could serve as a lesson for young girls on how to properly run and care for a household, especially considering the time it happened.

Bloody Mary, Bloody Mary, Bloody Mary

Age: 22

Text/Story: “In middle school, we all dared each other to say ‘Bloody Mary’ three times in the mirror. We were too scared to try it alone, so we did it at sleepovers. We thought we’d summon a ghost or maybe just freak each other out. Even though it was a joke, we kind of believed it and it was a huge bonding thing between us.”

Analysis: The Bloody Mary ritual is an urban legend with folkloric roots, typically performed by children or teens. Originally, it was a divination ritual that dared young women to walk a flight of stairs backwards with only a candle and hand mirror in a darkened house. If you saw a figure other than yourself, it was a sign you’d die before getting married (a popular fear at that time). Despite being largely theatrical, it’s a popular choice for social rite of passage: a test of bravery and conformity. In modern times and in modern media, it’s seen as an initiation into friend groups or a scare tactic for bullies. It’s seen as a strong example of how fear and imagination can impact group dynamics and echoes how older superstitions around reflections and spirits have been passed down for generation. It’s not tied to religion but shows how rituals convey deeper psychological and cultural meaning.

Voodoo Village (St. Peter’s Church)

Informant

ET is a Memphis, Tennessee resident who recalls this particular supernatural urban legend he heard from his social groups as a teenager. This is a classic case of teenagers passing rumors along orally.

Text

The Free Masons are a religious secret society. The informant’s mom’s friend is supposedly a member of the Free Masons. They are a cult characterized by chapters across the world and secret handshakes and unique vernacular. They have certain symbols and calls & response that can be recognized by outsiders, but their secret nature encourages conspiracy. Apparently, the requirements to join isn’t high, but faith in a specific God is necessary. A rural neighborhood in memphis referring to themselves as the Church of St. Peter, but everyone else regards them as Voodoo Village due to the vast amount of Masonic imagery desplayed around the neighborhood. It’s located near the backwoods with few ever visiting or residing there, but plenty of rumors come out of it from visits driving through or by. These include:

  • Dead cats and dogs hanging from trees
  • Cars breaking down in the middle of town
  • Hearing whispers following you around
  • Getting chased by crazy people with baseball bats
  • A van is parked by a dead end street that will supposedly pull over and block you in if you enter the street
  • Weird bonfires and spells during the Satanic Panic

It is not advised to exit your car while passing through, but teenagers often dare each other to visit or visit together as a legendary quest, especially on Halloween.

Analysis

This urban legend feels very classic, modern Americana to me from the Satanic Panic to the car breaking down being a very American horror, set in a largely white state with “that one part of town” nobody dares goes to, likely reflecting a marginalized, poor, neglected, and harrassed, lower-class minority neighborhood. It feels akin to the classic Act 1 setup for a 2000s teen movie that would be used as Propp’s 2nd Function, the interdiction warning the hero against something while letting the audience know that’s where the story is headed. Additionally, Tennessee is a highly religious state prone to superstitions as reflected by the Satanic Panic the informant mentioned, and as it’s not exactly a state known for a lot of attractions, the Midwest Blues of “nothing to do” compels the teenagers to seek out thrills such as legendary questing the local devil-town rumors. It represents the “other world” heroes must exit the safety of their home to enter shown by many models of narratives, even Campbell’s hero’s journey, and its attunement on Halloween further reflects how it serves as a space of inversal where the usual norms and rules are no longer in place. This becomes even more true when it is Halloween. The social implications of this location likely being a marginalized and neglected neighborhood somewhat reflects the American south’s xenophobia toward anything that doesn’t match their ideal of a neighborhood.
