Girl Scouts’ Bridge Ceremony

“Everytime in Girl Scouts that we went up a level; so, Daisy to Brownie, Brownie to Junior, Junior to Cadet, Cadet to Senior, and Senior to Ambassador. We had a Bridge Ceremony to mark the transition. There are a lot of different ways that we did them. But, generally, they include a bridge or something to like physically pass from one side to another. And generally, before this ceremony happens, you will talk to the level above you to ask them about wisdom and what questions you might have and you talk to a troop in the level below you and pass on your wisdom to them”

“And then at the actual ceremony there’s plenty of stories that everyone has to read a bit and it’s all about like the Girl Scout Promise and Law. Sometimes you just skip straight to calling each girl across the bridge and then giving them their next badge that goes on their vest to signify ‘hey, you’re older!’ So each girl crosses the bridge. Yay! You’re all the next level”

What are some variations?

The informant described having “something reminiscent of the year below or the year that you are,” such as when transitioning from brownies to juniors, they had brownies and junior mints.

“There’s a lot of variations on that. One year, we limboed into cadets, I think. We started having pool parties, so we kind of just jumped into the next year. 

But the actual physical bridge is a big one. The most institutionalized version of this [would be that] many people when they bride to cadets fly to San Fran to cross the Golden Gate Bridge because thats when you’re younger girl to older girl. You’re expected to start volunteering and helping out with events and stuff. You’re going into middle school, so it’s a big transition.”

Analysis: While this ceremony is institutionalized in the idea, the international organization of Girl Scouts provides endless opportunities for multiplicity and variation of this tradition. In fact, not all troops even participate in this tradition since it is not a required ceremony. Other troops even have completely different ceremonies for transitions. These ceremonies signify the girls’ growth each year and excite them for moving up in the ranks. The bridge itself has a symbolism of moving on into the next state of life, which becomes a little looser as they get older and the bridge becomes less literal. The informant even recognizes an important coming of age transition into cadets and sometimes go to San Francisco, emphasizes the weight of their new responsibilities of an older girl. These ceremonies set the tone for the new expectations each year and celebrate their achievements thus far as well as getting passed down wisdom from the girls a level older, making them feel more prepared for their next year of life. 

Once a Girl went to Camp

Context: In girl scouts, they sing songs around the campfire. Most songs are call and response but the song provided by the informant is sung in unison. She pointed out that “boy scouts might have a similar but opposite version and this was a friendly rivalry between them.”

Girl scout songs are sung throughout all ages, from kindergarten to high school. The girls don’t start camping until daisy and brownie, typically around fourth grade. “As you get older and become a cadet, senior, or ambassador (6th grade plus) you start being the one to lead the younger girls, so your role changes” according to the informant.

When she found a spider in her bed, 

this is what the girl scout said, girl scout said:

“Spider, Spider go away, go away

You are not allowed to stay, allowed to sta-a-ayy”

This is what my le-eader said

“No two bodies in one bed, in one bed”

Once a boy scout went to camp, went to camp

Went to camp without his lamp, without his la-a-amp

Then he found a spider in his bed, 

this is what the boy scout said, boy scout said:

“AHHH”

Analysis: Before boy scouts became the gender-neutral scouts, girl scouts and boy scouts naturally had a gendered rivalry. Especially earlier in the development of children, they naturally segregate themselves by gender; boy and girl scouts institutionalized this segregation, further strengthening the divide. As children begin camping overnight with their group, they’ll sing around a campfire. On the surface, this song just seems to be a silly campfire song to entertain the kids and pass down for generations, keeping the rivalry with the boy scouts alive. 

Although the informant only points this out to be the purpose of the song, it also provides a warning to these new overnight campers. Firstly, ensure you remember your equipment or bad things might happen. Be aware of wildlife, including spiders; this will make the girls more meticulous about checking their bedding for any sort of bug or animal. Interestingly, this song has the leader warning against two bodies in one bed, suggesting that beds should not be shared at all between two people. Then, the song turns onto the boy scouts to make fun of them for being scared of the spider rather than talking to it, suggesting that the girl scouts should remain calm when facing a scary bug or animal they see in the wilderness. Essentially, this song provides a blueprint for appropriate behavior at camp through a silly song for the younger kids to remember by throwing in some rivalry. This then becomes a cycle to be passed down from the older to the younger girls. 

Girl Scout Camp ghost story

“So this is a ghost story that I heard when I was probably ten years old at girl scout summer camp. Basically, there was a little girl who went to the girl scout summer camp, and one night while she was sleeping, she heard a loud bang outside and it woke her up. Then she heard it again, and when nobody else woke up she took her flashlight and went outside to see what the noise was. Now, what she didn’t know was that there was an ax murder who had escaped from jail and had wandered into the same woods the camp was located. While she was wandering around outside, he found her and cut her up and threw her body parts in the lake. Ever since, she’s been stuck here and will try to lure girls out of their cabins at night so the ax murderer can cut them up too. I know it’s kind of dumb, but imagine hearing this when you’re like ten and staying in supposedly the exact cabin the dead girl stayed in. It scared me so bad I refused to go anywhere alone the rest of the week.”

Context:

E is a nineteen year old from Southern California. She, as mentioned above, heard this ghost story while at a weeklong summer camp designed for girl scouts. It was told to her while her bunkmates were telling ghosts stories before going to bed. She retold the story to me over the phone.

Analysis:

This ghost story was specifically generated to scare the audience. It is also important to note that the audience is essential in this narrative. It is a story about a girl scout told to other girl scouts. It would not hold nearly the same impact if it was told in a different location or to a different group of people, especially considering the role those elements play in the story. It is also important to note that no one claims to have seen the ghost, but just that she exists. She is also designed to be the same age and type of girl (a girl scout) as the audience. The performance of the story was strong enough to convince these girl scouts that the ghost was real. This piece of folklore is very contingent on the culture it was created in and is not as impactful outside of that culture. The narrative is also designed specifically to scare the teller’s peers, so it has a hoax-like element to it, told to scare than as a fact or honest belief in ghosts.
